Last fall I experienced ice dyeing with friends. I have been asked to share here.

This can be a piece of cotton fabric, a cotton bag, etc. Also silk scarves were done. Fiber reactive dyes were used. Container to catch the melted ice with a metal grid and netting on top. The piece to be dyed is placed on the netting and then crushed ice is placed on top of the piece. The powdered dye is sprinkled in tiny amounts over the ice. Then you wait for the ice to melt! That is the hardest part!
Gloves and masks are worn for safety. You do not want to inhale the dye powder.
Moving forward to last week..........More ice dyeing with friends. This time I took apart two silk jackets and a skirt. I Have not worn one jacket in a very long time, and the suit was never worn. I thought they would more useful made into other things. Project bags maybe. I also dyed some silk scarves. Two of the scarves were from last fall. I was not totally happy with them so I over dyed them. This shows before and after.
I have not settled down to a large project with them as yet. Just playing with small samples of fiber. I purchased a TwistedGrain Wee Bee from a lovely gal that could not stand the smell of the wood. It is Tamboti and I love the smell. Reminds me of Sandalwood. Then I stumbled upon someone that is just starting to make and sell spindles. Hipstrings. This little dynamo spins cotton like magic. I think there will be another with a larger whorl in my future. The whorl is laser etched and the shaft is carbon-fiber. The first photo is most of the support spindles. Some are homemade by me. Always sticking a bead on a knitting needle or a bamboo skewer to see *what if.*.... The following photos have more information. Looking at the spindles like this makes me think I should settle down and get some spinning done! I do have some sock yarn in progress on one wheel. I have been spending a lot of time knitting and making bobbin lace. Just not enough time in a day!
The Birds-eye Maple weighs 21 grams and the Holly weighs 18 grams. Love them both. The fiber is from World of Wool. It is botany Lap Waste that I have blended on my Richard Duncan drum carder. I added some Firestar to the greens and silver Angelina to the purple. Just a wee bit of shine. I have only been spinning with support spindles for about a year. Drop spindles for a few years and 30+ years on wheels.Wonder why it took me so long to discover support spindles? Loving them.
On Earth Day I won a support spindle from Bristlecone Artisan Heirlooms. This is a Twindle. It is called Birch Tree. I ordered 500 grams (17.637 ounces) of Botany Lap Waste from World of Wool. No choices of what is in the bag. This is the 500 gram lot. Blended fibers and some samples and skeins. The pink is what is being spun in the previous photo. 122 yards of 2 ply. The lovely gray called out for some silver Angelina. Can't wait to spin that lot!
I decided to blend some Angelina into the lavender and purple. Silver in the lavender and copper into the purple. I hope you can see the sparkle of the Angelina in the photos. I tried not to be too heavy handed with it so it will be subtle in the yarn. I like making batts on the carder. Storage I think is better if the batts are rolled into balls. Sometimes I pull the batt off of the carder through a diz to make a long strip of roving. Those are stored as little nests.

I am sure this will not be my only order from World of Wool. I will be playing with my own farm raised fiber too. So much fun.

Three shades of green batts from The Fibre Fairy are now spun and the shawl is finished and being blocked. I increased the size so I could use all of my yarn. Got a bit nervous at the end. I used all but four yards. That was close! Very happy with it. Blocked out to 25 X 60 inches.
Here is my latest support spindle acquisition. It is a Mary Bears Oso in cedar. It smells wonderful! I do not usually name things, but this one said it should be The Painted Pony. I spun the sample of BFL blend that came with the first cedar. I sent that one back to Mary as it was too heavy for my taste. She graciously made another and it is just the right weight. I wound off the yarn onto a winding star that friend Cheryl made for me.Sandyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17578088426963122043noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1038042749025852143.post-42243856021680710682013-02-13T08:22:00.004-08:002013-02-13T08:22:57.045-08:00

I have finished the three shades of green. Wonderful stuff!
I spun the darkest first. Today I started on the lightest and then I will spin the medium shade. I will do a bobbin of each shade and then ply on itself. I want to knit a shawl that is shaded from light at the top to dark on the bottom with the yarn. Not sure just yet what pattern I will use. It will depend on the yardage I get.
I have to share a gift from a very dear friend. She made a spindle for me, a support bowl holder and some winding stars. I love them! The spindle bowl is felted as well as the spindle whorl. There is a wooden bead inside for more weight. Can't wait to play!

I have been neglectful. Sorry.
Last month I acquired two new spindles and a support bowl from Malcolm Fielding. The spin so fast and well that you cannot even see the motion. All I can say is WOW! The order also included a spindle for a very dear friend. Hers is a Dervish in Lace Sheoak. Mine are a Pu Yok Tibetan in Lace Sheoak and Blackheart Teatree, and the starter kit Dervish and bowl are in Tasmanian Myrtle. Shafts and bowl center is Dymondwood.
First came the Rose from Gripping Yarns. It is Lignum Viate. The wood smells like roses. Next I ordered spindles from Malcolm Fielding. I am waiting on their arrival so no photos yet. I ordered a Cocobolo Russian from Enid Ashcroft in the UK. (3) I found a Texas Jeans maple spindle (1) while at Lambtown in the Carolina Homespun booth. When I got back home again I had an offer to trade one of my knitting bags for a Spanish Peacock holly spindle.(2) I jumped on that right quick! I also have been making support spindles to see what works. I had some carved disks and with a double point knitting needle and a grommet, they weigh 7 grams each. They spin silk quite well. I am slowly progressing with some silk that I dyed on the holly spindle. I have been spinning for 30 years on wheels and took up drop spindles a few years ago. Just now getting into support spindles and I love them.
Now I am on the look out for bowls to use with support spindles, of course more support spindles and ways to store them. These fabric bowls were made by a dear friend. They function as bases for wood, glass or ceramic support spindle bowls. Keep the bowls from slipping off your lap or leg. Sometimes I use a lap bowl as the Gin Glass in a previous post and sometimes I use a shallow bowl in my lap or on a table or beside me in a chair.
Here we have a work in progress on a support spindle. The lap bowl is working quite well. So glad that Cheryl bought that Gin! :-) The glass works equally well in the wide bowl and in the base. Sort of a two for one thing. I am really enjoying support spindling. I have some on order from Malcolm Fielding. Cannot wait for them to arrive.

I finished another shawlette. This one is so incredibly soft. It is a blend of silk and wool. The pattern is Demalangeni by Wendy Neal. The shawl is drying now. I plan to add freshwater pearls to each point.
I was gifted a lovely support spindle from a dear friend. She made it from a hardwood dowel, a
porcelain drawer pull and a glass donut. The cork came from a bottle of wine. How cute is that with a sheep printed on it? She is going through chemo and I hope the shawl will give her some comfort as she walks this path. It is the Afternoon Tea pattern by Helen Stewart. It appears much darker in the fist shot of it in progress. The yarn is wool/mohair from Kid 'N Ewe.
I will add a few photos here, but if you wish to see everything check out my pages on flickr. www.flickr.com Search for The Lace Shepherdess. The last nine batches are drying. Then they will be photographed and added to my flickr pages. As hot as it is now, it should not take too long.
I have been dyeing again. So much fun to see how the natural colored Coopworth fleece comes out. Most of my flock are shades of natural gray. This creates a heather when dyed.Sandyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17578088426963122043noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1038042749025852143.post-14488420917050060552012-04-17T10:49:00.000-07:002012-04-17T10:49:12.364-07:00Silk stealing mice!Looks like the dye sample book will be a bit short..............I went out this morning to check on the dyed fiber from last week. It has been cool and damp so things were not drying too fast. When I checked the wool and silk samples I noticed that some sample groups were missing the silk. Lost six silk samples and the mouse left some calling cards! Somewhere there is a mouse nest with a very colorful silk lining. Hope the wee mousses appreciate their mamma's efforts.
I had the samples on a drying screen with cheesecloth clipped down, both top and bottom but it did not stop the mouseSandyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17578088426963122043noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1038042749025852143.post-78959222401631329162012-04-15T10:21:00.000-07:002012-04-15T10:21:50.522-07:00Dyeing with a friendA friend came for a few days last week. We played with a lot of dye. 39 sample colors on wool and silk. 4 lots of vat dyed fleece and 4 painted rovings. All in one very l-o-n-g day!
The fiber was measured and placed onto plastic wrap after a good soak. Dye applied and the packages were rolled up and tied with some garden tape with the color numbers written with a Sharpe pen. Then steamed for about 40 minutes. The bottom photo shows some of the packages after steaming. The next morning we opened them and after rinsing they were put onto a drying rack. The garden tape was left with each bundle for identification.

This was done with some lesser quality roving which is fine for our plans. We are going to make sample books with the fiber and color information. The samples of wool are large enough for a bit to be put into the book as is and a bit to be spun to show what a yarn would look like.

My friend had mixed the colors prior to coming to my house. We needed to add vinegar to the stock solutions and some of the bottles being smaller could not hold the vinegar too. We poured some of the dye from each of the too full bottles into a jar as we worked. The jar became full so started a second jar and that one would up being about three quarters full. I thought it would be fun to see what *ugly* color those jars would produce. Hence the vat dyeing. One was sort of dark green (bottom of photo) and the other is shown in the top of the photo.

I worked on it mostly in the evenings and had to rip back more than once. Even so, I enjoyed knitting it and putting the beads on with a crochet hook worked like a charm. Better than stringing the beads onto the yarn and playing slide around. As you can see from the close up below, I need to put some pins into the edge loops yet, but had to get a picture and post while I had time. I still have quite a bit of the baby camel and silk handspun, so may do another shawl from it. This one is 58 inches across and 32 inches down the back with 47 inches on each side. Not sure yet if this one will be for me, a gift or for sale.
On to the next project............

I have been knitting socks for many years. Once long ago I read a pattern and when I got to the turn the heel instructions I balked. "Oh no, I do not think I can do that" went through my head. One day I saw and article in Spin-Off by Celia Quinn on knitting boot socks. With the article and the Elizabeth Zimmerman book that Celia mentions I decided to take the plunge. I figured if I got stuck I could ask for help. One step at a time is good in many situations. Go forward until you are at the end or get stuck and either figure it out, or ask for help. I managed to knit a pair of socks following the instructions even when I thought things did not look right. It worked! I was then on the path to being a sock knitter. I even had a pair of hand spun dog hair and wool socks published in Spin-Off. Now these many years later I always have at least one pair in progress so I have something to do while waiting in a doctor's office or at the auto repair shop, etc. I used double points for a very long time and finally tried two socks at a time on two circular needles and now also the magic loop on one circular. A few years ago I tried toe up and that is my preferred method. Three pair in progress in the picture are 3 ply hand spun BFL that I had blended with 20% nylon at the mill. I dyed the yarn in balls, sitting them first into one color and then turning the balls over into another color. This is a fun way to dye and I like the results. From top left the socks are; Jojoland Melody, (magic loop) Drops Fabel Superwash, (magic loop) and the other three are my hand spun. (double points) The first pair was done with peacock and old rose, second is a mix of color to cover up the screaming orange from the first dip into the pot. The last is done in purple and forest green. However, there are only a few spots of green showing, it turned into a nice gray where the dye mixed. Not bad, but not what I was aiming for either. I will be playing more with this technique, but first I must get more sock yarn spun.Sandyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17578088426963122043noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1038042749025852143.post-18984999032272333852011-11-10T14:00:00.000-08:002011-11-10T14:00:46.702-08:00More Dye results
We went from this>
